Frequently Asked Questions...
What is a comparable external flash?
I have a Canon Rebel and I fell in love with the Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash for Canon Digital SLR Cameras! Unfortunately, it is out of my price range. Are their any comparable external flashes that are cheaper. I need lots of options because I need to get a flash good for outdoor lifestyle shooting in the next 2-3 months! Please help!
Answer:
I was in the same position as you! Avoid non-Canon unless you can find really good reliable reviews. Some of the real cheap units operate at the incorrect voltage and can damage your camera. Even the better names can fall short on some of the functions.
I got a nearly new Speedlite 380EX from ebay and got some great results but it lacked the ability to swivel - it only tilts. Outdoors I guess you won't be bouncing so this may be OK for your needs.
I sold that on ebay and moved up a model to the 420EX (also from ebay) - a little more power but more importantly the head swivels and tilts. I get great results and it just plugs and plays.
Stick with Canon - they are great flashguns and worth the extra $$$. There are plenty available as folk upgrade to the "must have" latest model.
