Frequently Asked Questions...
Canon EOS 400D + Jessops 460AFDC won't fire flash unit, please help!?
I know that the flash unit works as I've borrowed it from a friend, and it works on his 450D, and it works on slave with my camera if I fire my built in flash.
I feel like I'm making a fatal error - he told me to simply attach to the hot-shoe, put the camera into manual, put the flash unit into automatic and it should fire when I take a photo. While I'm testing in a well lit situation, and I will actually be shooting in a low lit situation, I would like to know that it does work before I go out to shoot.
Could someone please save me from my own stupidity and tell me exactly what amateur error I've made!
Sorry, I didn't make that clear - he didn't say I had to use M on the camera, just he knows I prefer it.
I've tried Auto, shot in a dark area and cleaned the hot shoes and still no response - thank you for the answer though.
I have tried a radio trigger for studio lighting and it's worked fine, so it could well be non-compatible ![]()
At least I've not been doing anything wrong! Lol.
Answer:
You need to make sure the flash is in E-TTL mode, not just a generic auto or manual mode.
Heres why:
Canons E-TTL flash system works by pre-flash metering.
A split second before the exposure the camera fires a low pre-flash from which the camera meters the flash for the main exposure.
On auto or manual guns, even in slave mode, the flash will fire at the pre-flash, so the tube is recharging that split second later when the actual expsoure comes around.
This is why canon flashguns are better. They understand what the canon camera is doing.
The Jessops gun, if it's sold as working with the canon system, should acutally know this, and so it either isn't seated on the hotshoe properly, or isn't set to the correct E-TTL mode.
When you come to buy your own flashgun, buy canon. It'll just work.
