Frequently Asked Questions...
Using 550ex flash for wedding?
I will be using a canon 40d and Canon 550ex flash for a wedding in two weeks. My issue is that the flash works on eTTL but not eTTL2 as on the 580ex. From what Ive heard eTTL1 has problems with red eye when used in high speed sync.. I presume this shouldnt be an issue as there wont be too many action shots etc. Is there anything else I should be aware of when using eTTL1? ..I dont mind using manual flash if necessary. Also, could anyone recommend a radio flash trigger that I could use with this equipment? Ill probably need it to work over 30 yards line of sight.. [already have the shot in mind]. Thanks!
Answer:
Red eye is easy to avoid, just get the flash away from the lens. A bracket and off camera shoe cord (to retain TTL control) will do this. Another method is to leave the flash on a stand, but to retain TTL will take a long cord or a very expensive Pocket Wizard setup. You can find plans for extended length shoe cords on the Internet, giving you 30-50 feet of full TTL control for a few dollars and some build time.
If the 550EX has an auto mode, use that with the flash on a stand. You still have some flash control that way, without having to go back to the flash after every shot to adjust the power. The 550EX does have full manual control as well as TTL, I just don't remember if it has an auto mode.
