Pick up a fashion magazine in recent years and you might find the ubiquitous ring flash shot glaring back at your from the pages.
You can tell by the trademark halo and directionless shadows on the models face and body. The skin glistens and glows.
When most people think of a ring flash its invariably the macro variety. These are often used to take close ups of plants, flowers or insects and not the cover models for the front of vogue. These are typically of low power output so not suitable for this kind of work.
For proper fashion work, you will need to bring out the big guns. These flash heads often require an external power supply because of the power they pump out. They used to be only available to professional fashion photographers or those with deep pockets, Recently however, we have seen the development of ring flash adaptors that fit over conventional flashguns and turn them into a ring flash.
These are basically a modifier for your flash gun like a reflector or bounce. They consist of a donut shape reflector in which you put the lens through. This is an excellent way for the amateur to get the ring flash look without breaking the bank.
Ring flashes has had press recently but if used sparingly they are a valuable addition to the photographer's tool kit
